Reading tests are going to be introduced for all 6 year old in the English education system. This is a new Government policy to place more emphasis on basic literacy skills – in particular reading in schools. The reading tests will be used as a quick progress check and will help identify pupils needed additional support. The new reading tests will be starting in 2012 and whilst many people view these tests as a positive approach there are some critics such as the United Kingdom Literacy Association who have warned against a “one-size-suits-all approach” with regards the phonics nature of the new literacy tests.
